Sarah Barrett

Artist committed to all disciplines. Interested in contemporary fine art practice, including site specific, interactive and public art. Particularly interested in the ways artists find their own platforms for showcasing their work and have been looking at D.I.Y initiatives that support emerging artists. Recent work looks at curatorial practice and archiving as a means of showcasing work and sharing information. Photography (digital and SLR), screen-printing and Mac skills developed over the last three years have been important tools for promoting my events based work, whether on the internet or in the form of flyers, posters or brochures.

I have always been encouraged and inspired by nature’s great beauty and using a range of Medias from screen printing through to model making, by adding interdisciplinary skills I am able to follow my passions of creativity.
I have a great interest in photography and through computer manipulation I am able to create inspired, personalized one-off prints.

Richard Martin

Over the past three years at Leeds college of Art and Design I have looked at many different forms of art. In the second year I briefly touched on Video and Photography and since then I have been hooked on them. The pictures that are included are from my first attempt at Video/performance in which I staged several events outside Starbucks. This was to see if people would notice things outside of their normal routine, I carried this idea on in the third year. Hopefully I’ll be making art long after I finish my degree so watch this space.

Costume? Or fashion? As an artist I blur these barriers. Are the pieces I create conceptual couture or modern sculptures of dress? I like my work to be ambiguous in the sense that I enjoy people to conjure up their own interpretations of my work by the connotations I suggest.

My work is experimental: challenging the future of fashion, using a variety of exciting materials to create visual pieces that stand out against the norms of fashion to reflect my unique approach and working ethos.

Fiona Murray

The world we live in is ever-changing. We waste the products of a material culture. Society is a wasteful machine churning things out to cover up the mistakes it has made, instead of re-using what it is we already have we should savour our heritage and protect the past. Stop concreting over our past memories and rebuild the future in stone.

I believe strongly about not wasting materials in the world and trying to reuse, rework or recycle items that could have a further function. The context of my work depends on the immediate environment around me, Leeds, London, the sea, the country, hidden spaces. My work also draws on social awareness in people and their relationship with the immediate environment.

Nicola Middleton

Throughout the three years of this course natural form has been the catalyst for much of Nicola’s work, adding significance to the multi-disciplinary exploration of materials and techniques, assisting in the assimilation of concept, innovation and context. Sinuous and biomorphic forms have emerged from this journey evoking growth and presence.
Nicola’s final piece ‘Nature Unseen’, is based on photographic visual analysis, offering the viewer a microscopic glimpse of organic structures beyond the surface form. The audience in turn is encouraged to explore beyond the obvious and experience nature’s innate creativity, the ‘unknown’ and the ‘unseen’ being given lasting exposure.

Donna Walker

I am an interdisciplinary re-designer who works predominantly with furniture and spaces. My ¬aim as a re-designer is not to design new products which encourage consumers to replace older, or less fashionable products, but to work with the history and value of existing, unloved, damaged and discarded objects, increasing the longevity of our possessions, instead of condemning re-useable resources to landfill.

Re-Design, (2007) is a project using discarded and unwanted furniture found on the streets of Leeds, and second hand furniture/fabrics donated to me. By altering the functions and aesthetics of the furniture, I have found new ways to experience, explore and expand the possibilities of these existing domestic objects, whilst retaining and celebrating their history through the documentation of the objects history on the tags.

As an interdisciplinary designer-maker, my work focuses on the form and function of contemporary 3D objects. Working with a variety of processes, I explore form and function as overlapping concerns. I intend for my designs to be appreciated as sculpted aesthetic forms along side their functional role. Each piece is designed for function not to overshadow shape and form not to domineer purpose.

Bryony Pritchard

Live play, joining in, and participation describes how I approach my work. Concerned with the ‘in-between’ space where creative disciplines merge and cross, I explore the theme journey in the forms of performance, installation, photography and film.

My current work investigates the possibilities of transitional spaces such as mazes, labyrinths, lifts and even the local bus stop.

Steps on my journey include maze parties, teaching salsa in moving elevators and dancing by bus numbers.

At this milestone on my journey, I wonder, do I tip toe or stride to my next interdisciplinary adventure?

Alicia Talikowska

As an interdisciplinary artist and designer, I have experimented in the roles of conceptual artist, photographer, video artist, curator, performer, publicist, workshop facilitator, researcher and collaborator. My most recent projects, Re-Toyed Trash and Archive: Leeds involve collaborations with other artists.

I wish to also collaborate with an audience, enabling their creative participation. By revealing the processes of creating work and allowing anyone to take part, I hope that art can be accessible and the existing barriers between audience and artist can be broken down.

Kelly Pollard

During my studies I have learnt valuable skills to aid me in the future, from silversmithing and woodwork to life-drawing and photography. Being an interdisciplinary art & design student has given me the opportunity to practice with many different materials, helping me to discover new practice directions. At the start of the course my heart was set upon being a jeweller but over the past three years I have found an enjoyment in creating shelters, taking inspiration from environmental artists such as Andy Goldsworthy. This has introduced me to working in schools and has opened a window of opportunities for me. In the future I intend to produce unique and individual pieces using the insights and techniques I have gained.

Claire Duffin

Over the past few years I have warned people about flying bikes, zombie O.A.Ps and shape shifters. I have appeared in the May 2006 issue of Hello and Heat Magazine where I gave away my style secrets and talked about my life as a Wetherby girl. Last year I also warned people about the hidden dangers of everyday life by attaching hazard warning labels to trousers, high heels and staircases in stores across Yorkshire. In January 2007 I set up the Law Awareness Society to promote the more bizarre and arcane laws to the public, in the hope to decrease the number of “unfortunate fines” and “embarrassing arrests”.

I am a workshop based crafts maker with a heartfelt passion to make beautiful yet functional objects. As a practitioner, my on-going fascination for learning new techniques and exploring the nature of materials is fundamental to my work.

My current work continues an interest in tableware, which has been present in some of my past work. My most recent work is clearly influenced by my love of the outdoor environment, especially the beach.

I feel my work represents a positive embrace of the interdisciplinary experiences I have had within my art and design education, which I intend to continue to explore and develop further after my degree.

Nicolar Bell specialises in Contemporary Character Design. Her work combines illustration, 3D objects and web design. In 2006, she set up Stitchikers.co.uk, an interactive web-based project to track the movements of a group of stitched animals. Individual Stitchikers reached locations as far away as Argentina.
An interest in creating ambiguous, decorative and functional characters has led to experimentation with puppets as jewellery, recyclable designer toys to educate about the sustainability crisis, and the personification of everyday objects. She likes to incorporate interactivity and humour into her work.

As an emerging artist in Leeds my work has embraced an interdisciplinary approach with a variety of media. Highly influenced by culture and people I enjoy exploring stories told and immortalising vulnerable emotions. This also feeds my passion for theatre and performance. I am interested in design and languages. Having moved from Portugal to England 8 years ago, I draw from this experience and feed this into my passion for Art and Design.
I enjoy working in a variety of media and exploring the potential of techniques such as Print, 3D, Illustration, Fine art and Textiles. As a result of this, I have pursued this broad-based Interdisciplinary Art & Design Course. Recent projects have involved glass, resin, wood and casting materials. I have also experienced collaborating with clients, for example a light design proposal for The Electric Press courtyard, and a design solution for the Mint Club for the Non-smoking ban on 1st July.

Gemma Fozzard

As a practicing Jeweller and Interdisciplinary Artist, I find my work reflects many of my personal motivations. My body sculpture range “The Sound Of Jewellery” is inspired by a passion for music, a desire to re-use redundant materials, a fascination of a constantly changing journey, being able to hold something meaningful close to you, popular culture and a need for progression. These ranges are entirely made from either neglected cassette tapes or unwanted music scores and fanzines. By using various processes I have manipulated these materials to produce two semi-permanent collections of pop art jewellery.

Joseph Critchley

Joseph is a consistent under-achiever whose disruptive, attention-seeking behaviour must improve if he is ever going to achieve anything near the high standard of work he is undoubtedly capable of. He has succeeded in disturbing tutors and fellow students alike with his rabid enthusiasm for the deliberately obtuse and abstract. This most unhealthy of obsessions has also spawned a series of tragically over-ambitious “art” projects, each more ridiculous and overblown than the last. He seems possessed by the possibility of what he calls “total immersion through temporary suspension of disbelief” a strange and unnecessary goal we wholeheartedly suggest he abandons post-haste. Joseph refuses to accept the inevitable and fall into line, like the other students. He continues to defy what is expected of him and exhibits a blatant disregard for rules and regulations.

Studio layout & Clearing out the finishing room.

Hello Everyone,

Just two notices:

1: Bryony, Joe and Holly have marked out everyones areas in the studio. They are masked out on the walls of room one and two. So by all mean have a good nose to see how much space you have in case you'd like to change or swap with people etc. It would be good to do this soon as the first years may take them down.

2: The finishing room will be out of use from the 31st May, so could everyone make sure their work is out of there by then. If you don't use your draws in the finishing room could you let the tutors know as the second years may want to use them.Have a good weekend.
